Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively as part of a team on a horse breeding stud.The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work. They complete routine activities dealing with predictable and unpredictable problems relating to their work in the horse breeding sector.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory animal welfare and health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Work within horse breeding industry guidelines, codes of practice and regulations
  • Identify the role of the horse breeding sector, and its relationship to equine disciplines, including the racing codes
  • Maintain knowledge of industry codes of practice and regulations relevant to the horse breeding sector
  • Identify specific equine sector or discipline requirements that influence workplace breeding activities
       
Element: Apply knowledge of horse reproduction and breeding to work activities
  • Identify the main seasonal work activities on a horse stud and their relationship to horse reproduction
  • Compare and contrast the different sectors and work activities associated with natural mating and artificial insemination
  • Identify the role of genetics, horse pedigrees and bloodlines to the selection of horses in breeding activities on a stud farm
       
Element: Interpret horse breeding behaviour
  • Identify features of horse approaching sexual maturity and conditions impacting on breeding program
  • Recognise behaviours of mares indicating they are in oestrus
  • Recognise stallion behaviours related to breeding, including dominance and libido
  • Identify courtship and mating behaviours of mares and stallions, and organisational procedures for managing interactions
  • Recognise behaviours of mares pre-foaling and post-foaling
  • Identify specific safety risk factors for interacting with horses in different sections of a horse breeding stud
       
Element: Follow workplace procedures for daily activities
  • Follow safe work practices when interacting with horses, including using correctly fitted personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for activity
  • Follow workplace biosecurity practices according to workplace procedures
  • Care for and monitor horses, reporting issues and signs of ill health or injury according to workplace and animal welfare requirements
  • Complete work activities according to instructions, agreed timelines and workplace procedures
       
Element: Contribute to a productive horse breeding workplace
  • Undertake responsibilities and duties so as to promote cooperation and positive workplace relationships
  • Use appropriate communication techniques and technology to clarify information and undertake tasks
  • Raise issues and make constructive suggestions for improvements to workplace practices
  • Complete workplace records and documentation according to workplace requirements

Assessment Tasks
